Why Is No One Hiring Me?

One of the most frustrating things for an actor to deal with, is after spending countless hours training, hundreds of dollars on headshots and months looking for an agent you still can't land even small roles. The fact is that the acting profession has way more people trying to get work than there actually is. The behind the scenes politics actors are not aware of is that the food chain position is just as competative as the acting profession. For example your agent has to have a good working relationship with casting directors. If for some reason your agent has a reputaion among casting directors for sending weak talent for auditions, the casting directors may only see very few of that agents roster. This, ofcourse you would have no idea about because most actors think most agents have connections with casting. What they may know through other actors is that some agents seem to have more people working than other agents. The same holds true for
casting directors. There are three types of casting directors. 1) Above the Title Casting 2) Below the Title Casting  3) Unit Casting.  Some casting companies offer all three services to Producers. When you here the term above the title casting, these are casting directors who attach bankable actors to projects a year or so prior to production. The actor they supply is what is known as the Marquee talent where investors, studios and distributors finance the project based on track record. In fact, most casting in the Hollywood system use The Ulmer Scale . This book is published once a year listing the "A" "B" List actor and director bankability. Casting Companies have to be connected to get work from Producers. Some casting companies only cast
commercials and very few episodic or feature projects. It is important when you are seeking an agent to interview the agent don't let them interview you. You must ask questions such as " What casting directors do you work closely with? " and "If I become a client on your roster what is your marketing strategy... how do you plan to promote me ? Most agents will sed you on a "meet and greet" with casting directors. If your agent does not do this ...keep looking !
